Catriona (pronounced Catrina) is an ordained Baptist minister accredited by the Baptist Union of Great Britain, and currently works bi-vocationally as a Tutor at Luther King Theological College and as a Transitional Minister for the North-Western Baptist Association, serving a small church in Crewe.
Since ordination in 2003, she has served three pastorates, which gives her a rich and diverse experience of Baptist ministry, from a small, village church in rural North-West Leicestershire, to the bustling West End of Glasgow, and now the post-industrial railway town of Crewe. Throughout her time in ministry, she had served as mentor for Newly Accredited Ministers (NAMs), and as a placement supervisor for students, journeying with others as they discover their own identity as ministers. During the pandemic, she qualified as a Cross Professional Pastoral Supervisor, and supports experienced minsters and chaplains in reflecting on their ‘soul, role and context’.
Her first encounter with Luther King was way back in 1998, when she was encouraged to register as a lay student as part of her discernment process towards ordination. Between 1999 and 2003 she trained with Northern Baptist College (NBC), studying for a BA in contextual theology and completing placements in Anglican, Roman Catholic, and Baptist churches. As part of her NAMs studies, she began some research into the potential for Baptist history to be employed as a resource for reflection in the area of church health, and this eventually became the subject of a research degree. For many years, she was part of NBC’s student interview process, initially as an assessor and ultimately as chair of the panel. When the post of Tutor for Formation was advertised in 2023, she was able to complete the circle, returning to this place she loves, and helping to nurture a new generation of ministers.
Catriona describes herself as a generalist, with interests in theological reflection and reflective practice, church (denominational) history, church health, liturgy and worship, and pastoral theology, all of it rooted firmly in a local context. Reflecting her previous life as a professional engineer, she enjoys the administrative, governance, financial and health & safety aspects of church life – and teaches these as part of non-academic formation classes.
Outside of college and church, Catriona is a peer support volunteer with a cancer charity. She enjoys walking (almost anywhere), drinking tea, and cuddling with her (increasingly elderly) rescue cats.
