Winter School

Jesus and Mission in the Shadow of Empire

Led by Revd Dr Graham Adams and Revd Dr Jonathan Tallon, this Summer School will enable:

  • critical study of how biblical and contemporary Christian tradition informs reflection on Empire
  • critical analysis of how socio-political reality, like Empire, informs Christian tradition, reflection and mission
  • understanding, assimilation and evaluation of advanced scholarship in relation to Empire, historical and contemporary
  • demonstration of initiative, theological reflectiveness and missional insight in relation to the complex and ambiguous interactions between faith and socio-politics

In particular, we focus on –

  • imperial power and ideology in Scripture, especially the Roman context
  • imperial patterns of domination (g. gender, slavery, race), parameters of ‘civilisation’, and economics
  • the life of Jesus and reflections on him in the light of Empire
  • missional responses to Empire in the church and/or wider world
