About The Course

 As a Chaplaincy student, you will complete the modules such as: 

  • Multi-Faith and Secular Dimensions of Chaplaincy 
  • Moral Issues in Chaplaincy 
  • Reflective Practice: Relationships and Emotional Management in Ministry 
  • Reflective Practice: Inhabiting Public Ministry 
  • Reflective Practice Placement 
  • Chaplaincy and Christian Mission 
  • Chaplaincy in an Organisational Context 

In addition, students can choose further modules from the wide range available at Luther King, including areas such as biblical languages, theologies of the body, spirituality, and contemporary movements in theology including postcolonial/decolonial approaches.

Postgraduate Certificate

When studying for the Postgraduate Certificate in Chaplaincy Studies, you will take at least 2 modules from a core list, and a further module of your choice.

  • An upper second class (2:1) Honours degree or equivalent in a relevant subject.
  • Graduates in other disciplines with experience of Theology or Religious Studies to at least FHEQ Level 4 may also be admitted to the programme.
  • For mature students, prior professional experience will be taken into account as well as educational qualifications.

It is also important that every CPCPC pathway student has a CPCPC registered supervisor and we will work with you to ensure this is possible before admitting you to begin the course.

Postgraduate Diploma

Students taking the Postgraduate Diploma in Chaplaincy Studies will take a Research Methods module to support high quality investigation along with three Core Chaplaincy modules and two further modules chosen from a wider selection.

MA Degree

Students taking the MA in Chaplaincy Studies will study a minimum of three core chaplaincy modules, and choice of two further from these and a wider selection on offer at LKC, along with a module in Research Methods and a Dissertation.

Flexible Study Patterns: There are a variety of timetabling patterns to give flexibility, including modules taught across 4 or 8 weeks, and intensive 4-day block-taught modules in February and May. The course is delivered online, but please contact us for more details of the onsite Theology, Ministry and Ministry options available in the coming year.

Council of Professional Chaplains and Pastoral Carers Pathway

Overview

The Council of Professional Chaplains and Pastoral Carers (the Council) is the register of healthcare chaplains in UK, accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
The are two main routes open to you to work towards accreditation with the Council through our Chaplaincy Studies programmes.
1. For students who are already in substantive chaplaincy posts (usually full-time in an NHS/healthcare setting) it is possible to begin working towards Council accreditation as part of a Postgraduate Certificate in Chaplaincy Studies.
You will take three modules, and complete 200 hours of placement:
  • Chaplaincy in Organisational Context
  • Reflective Practice: Chaplaincy or Chaplaincy and Christian Mission
  • Reflective Practice: Placement
Please note, to be fully accredited you will need to complete all the requirements of the Council, which you can find on their website.
2. For students who are newer to healthcare chaplaincy or want a more in-depth programme, we would recommend an alternative route. This is our two-year Postgraduate Diploma course. This gives you a wider range of modules and a greater length of time to embed learning and complete placements to work towards accreditation with the Council.
